The Disadvantages and Side Effects of Cosmetic Surgery
Cosmetic surgeries have become more popular as the days are passing, and that’s not just among Hollywood celebrities but anyone who wants to feel beautiful. Beauty standards are fluid and subjective, and cosmetic surgery can help someone achieve the “perfect” lip or nose. But these surgeries also fix certain deformities, which may make an individual more confident and empowered. While it has its benefits, there are some disadvantages that you need to be aware of.
Let’s take a look.
1. Expensive procedure
If we know one thing for sure, it is that surgery is not kind to the pocket. It requires a lot of moolah, which can be a limiting factor for some. In fact, some people don’t get some work done all in one go; they get work done in installments to be able to pay for the full surgery. Some people also end up taking a loan for such surgeries, drowning in debt due to it. Moreover, post-surgery recovery adds to the stress. So, make sure you have your funds in place before you make any decision.
2. Recovery
While each surgery has a different recovery time, an estimated time would be approximately 2-3 weeks. Right after the surgery, the individual must rest and only focus on recovering as post-op complications due to too much movement may put you back in the hospital. It is also to be noted that these surgeries and recovery can be painful. Of course, there are painkillers to help you through, but movements are restricted to avoid much muscle stretch.
3. Addiction
One of the side effects of going through cosmetic surgery is that some people can develop an addiction to it. They may develop what is known as Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), which means finding faults or flaws with one’s appearance. This kind of disorder needs treatment, and no amount of cosmetic surgery will satisfy the individual. Apart from the emotional and mental trauma that the disorder causes, continuous work on the body can cause muscle and skin damage.
4. Expectation Vs. Reality
While the surgeon will do as is asked/requested by the patient, it is possible that the expected result may not please the person. It’s a classic example of how reality fails to catch up with something we picture in our heads. And the final results aren’t as pleasing. It can be disappointing when the results are not what we imagined, and that can fill an individual with regret. Moreover, working on the same region over and over again could be harmful.
5. Post-op depression
A surgery like this can be overwhelming as it changes some of your physical features. While these changes are made voluntarily, an individual can take some time to adjust to this. This adjustment can lead to unsettling and upsetting emotions and can cause depression in individuals.
6. Risk of death
Now, while this rarely happens, it is something to be aware of. If you have a health history, it is even more likely that something could go wrong during or after the surgery. Make sure to have a detailed discussion with your surgeon regarding any concerns at all about the operation. Some people also experience a reaction to anesthesia which could also complicate the procedure.
